Subject: Namibian Coats Conservation and Management Project (NACOMA) - Essay Competition for Grade 11 & 12 learners.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) and the Ministry of Regional Local Government Housing and Rural Development (MRLGHRD) through their Namibian Coast Conservation and Management Project (NACOMA – http://www.nacoma.org.na) is inviting learners for Grade 10 and 11 Learners to participate in an essay completion titled:
“IF YOU WERE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF NAMIBIA, WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO PROTECT OUR COASTAL ENVIRONMENT?”

1. Background
NACOMA is a five year project launched in March 2006 (2006 – 2011) funded by the World Bank as an implementing agency for the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). NACOMA aims to enhance coastal and marine biodiversity conservation through the mainstreaming of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use into coastal policy, legislative framework, and institutional and technical capacity.

2. Essay details
What threats facing our coast would you like to highlight and what actions and policies DO YOU THINK would best conserve the life in and around our beaches, wetlands, riverbeds and in the sea itself? Just imagine, you are the President: how would you express your concerns and your call for action to the nation?

3. Competition Rules
The competition is open to students in Grades 10 and 11 living in the Kunene, Erongo, Hardap and Karas regions. Essays should be approximately 500 words.

4. Prizes
The Grand Prize - The winner will get the opportunity to have his/her essay published in flamingo, Air Namibia’s in-flight magazine and a cheque for N$ 1000 from Venture Publications, publishers of flamingo. The winner will also undertake a tour sponsored by Living Desert Adventures.
2nd place – A cheque of N$500.00 and a tour for two persons sponsored by Living Desert Tours-Tommy’s.
3rd place – A cheque of N$250.00 and a tour for two persons sponsored by Levo Dolphin Tours and Chalets cc

5. Closing date
Submit your essay titled Essay Competition for Grade 10 and 11 Learners, along with your contact details, to the NACOMA office in Swakopmund, Sam Nujoma Avenue, Standard Bank Building, 1st Floor, Room 8 or PO Box 7018, Swakopmund or by email to agarises@nacoma.org.na on / or before 28 February 2010.
